Making a Log Cabin Mini-Bag

IMG_0796I found this cute pattern on Pinterest and had to give it a try.  The first attempt was done too hastily (too many other projects, just wanted to see what it looked like) and still isn’t completed–nor will it probably ever be.  But then my 8 year old granddaughter, Autumn,  saw the unfinished product and begged me to make her one out of the fabric she picked out by her own little self.  Grandma has a hard time saying NO, so after finally being done with a huge quilt project, I thought it would be a good quick thing to take on.  Although not TOO quick, since I realized where I’d gone wrong on the first one.

Autumn obviously has a good eye for color, although I had to add a couple of the lighter fabrics to get the contrast.  The Pinterest pattern didn’t have a pocket, so I decided to go all out and add one, knowing that little girls have a lot of stuff they like to haul around with them.  I had a few scraps of lace, so used that to pretty it up.

Finally, I had to figure out what to do for the backing.  There was enough pink (oh how she loves pink) left over to use that for the back.  I meandered my way through it, pressed it as best I could, and got it done, just in time for Palm Sunday.

The bag is quite small, even though the picture makes it look bigger.  I suppose one could make more log cabin blocks for a larger bag, and I may try that eventually.  But I was quite pleased with the way it came out!

A Word to the Wise

I’m pretty consistent at running out of the right fabric at the wrong time in my quilting.  I keep telling myself to buy it all before I start the quilt, but because I have a fairly large stash (not large enough, obviously), I like to use what’s on hand and then match it later, since my quilts tend to be somewhat scrappy.  Did it again this week–I’m about a third of the way through an Evening Star Nine Patch quilt in reds, whites and blues for my hubby, and suddenly I have no medium red.  Well, that’s not true, I have a medium red but only one, and I’ve already used it three times.  So off I go to Joann’s at noon, hoping to find just the right shade…again.

Backwoods Quilting of Vermont

Welcome to my site, which is under development in the true sense of the word.  Here I hope to post patterns, flops, successes, and maybe eventually create a small shop.  Backwoods Quilting of Vermont has been a dream of mine since approaching the Golden Age of retirement.  I love to quilt, enjoying each small step of the process from choosing the pattern, to making the colors work together, to the cutting, piecing and backing, and finally to the actual quilting and binding.  It’s been my passion since I got old enough to be patient with myself, and now that I’ve outfitted my immediate family and my grandchildren with quilted items, I think it’s time to spread out and start sharing my newfound knowledge with the world!
